Every day, nevertheless, is in God’s hands

July has left us with memories of fireworks, awesome weather, fresh summer foods and, oh yes, a feeling of being overwhelmed by weeds. In the face of chores, projects, and a good dose of humidity, too often we elected to read, watch the Olympics, and generally seek cool spots, inside or in the shade. Now, suddenly, we’re faced with a summer half over. Guess we’ll have to buckle down, even if it means a little sweat.
Necessity is the mother of invention, as the saying goes. It’s also the mother of maintenance. For those of us prone to procrastination, the sheer number of things that have to be done on a daily, routine basis – cooking, washing dishes, feeding the pets if present, picking up the debris from yesterday, cleaning, etc. is almost a full day’s work. We hope there is also some time for devotions somewhere in there.
Time, energy, and abilities are the unsung gifts we receive on a daily basis to accomplish these routine chores. Sometimes one or another of these gifts is in short supply, and we get a little frazzled, even self-pitying. But, necessity then becomes the mother of shortcuts and efficiencies.
As we enter the month of August, a time almost guaranteed to bring more heat and humidity, it would be a good time to take Rest-and-Rehydrate moments to ponder the big and little everyday things we need that we take for granted – our waking up able to see, talk and think, our refrigerator full of food, our safety through the previous night and through each day, that the car will start, and on and on. As we ponder, we should become aware of how blessed we are – and give thanks to God.
Every day consists of plans, big or little, on a written list or in our heads. Every day, nevertheless, is in God’s hands. His gift of time itself is one of the greatest of all for it encompasses His presence, no matter the hour, day or night. We recommend spending some time – it is His time, after all – sensing, enjoying and giving thanks for His presence.                                                                                                                                                Virginia
