“Why Me Lord”
Most of us remember the 60', long hair, hippies, LSD, flower child, free Love, free spirit, Woodstock, the perfect utopia they though, unfortunately some are still running the country, but that's another story. Kris Kristofferson was part of the music scene back then. “Why Me Lord”, which sold over a million copies, was inspired by the song “Help Me”, came out of what he calls a profound religious experience.
In the early 70's on a Sunday morning after a benefit at a local high school the previous night, Connie Smith asked Kris to go to church, The Nashville's Evan-gel Temple, which was pastored (for 30 years) by Jimmy Snow. The Nashville church became a familiar place of worship for many country stars. In his words he said, “We were all there Kneeling with our heads down and Jimmy said 'If there's anyone that feels lost today , raise your hand'. I don't go to church much and the notion of raising my hand was out of the question, I can't imagine me doing any of this but I felt my hand going up, I was hoping nobody else was looking, everyone had there head down praying. Then Jimmy said “Is anyone ready to receive Jesus, come down to the front of the church. I thought that would never happen and I found myself walking down with all these people. I can't even remember exactly what he said. It was something like, 'Are you ready to accept Jesus'. I said I didn't know, I didn't know what I was doing there. Well he pushed me down and said to knee down here. I don't remember what he was saying but whatever it was, was such a release for me that I found myself weeping in public and I felt this forgiveness that I didn't even know I needed.” If you google “Videos of Kris Kristofferson Why Me Story” you can see the interview on you-tube. I just happen to come across it while listening to gospel music while on the PC.
Why me Lord?
What have I ever done
To deserve even one
Of the pleasure I've known?
Tell me, Lord
What did I ever do
That was worth lovin' you
For the kindness you've shown?
Lord help me, Jesus
I've wasted it so
Help me, Jesus
I know what I am
But now that I know
That I needed you so
Help me, Jesus
My soul's in your hands
Try me, Lord
If you think there's a way
I can try to repay
All I've taken from you
Maybe, Lord
I can show someone else
What I've been through myself
On my way back to you
Lord help me, Jesus
I've wasted it so
Help me, Jesus
I know what I am
But now that I know
That I've needed you so
Help me, Jesus
My soul's in your hands
Lord help me, Jesus
I've wasted it so
Help me, Jesus
I know what I am
But now that I know
That I've needed you so
Help me, Jesus
My soul's in your hands
Jesus
My soul's in your hands And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. Hebrews 11:6
